Summary:
Supervises and coordinates all outpatient coding activities at Cherokee Nation Health Clinics. Areas of responsibility include Patient Medical Records, data entry for Resource Patient Management System, auditing, release of information, implementation of new coding programs and systems, and maintaining productivity reports for staff.Job Duties:
Routine duties shall include providing health care services to individuals eligible for services in accordance with the self-governance compact and funding agreement between the Cherokee Nation and the United States executed under the authority of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act. Abstracts clinical information from a variety of medical records and assigns appropriate ICD-9-CM, CPT, HCPCs and ADA codes to patients' records according to established procedures. Adheres to official coding guidelines and internal policies concerning code assignments. Queries physicians when code assignments are not straightforward or documentation in the record is inadequate, ambiguous or unclear for coding purposes. Keeps abreast of coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements. Brings identified concerns to supervisor or department manager for resolution. Analyzes, enters, and manipulates database. Confirms appropriate coding assignments. Stays familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within medical coding. Supervises all Outpatient Coding Staff for Cherokee Nation Health Services. Performs supervisory duties in accordance with Human Resources Policies and Procedures and any other applicable rules, regulations, and guidelines. Provides direction to staff in manners of departmental operations. Handles patients' complaints by gathering information, analyzing situations, making determinations, and implementing results. Ensures that safety and security are maintained. Submits required program reports and maintains records. Coordinates staff activities to ensure compliance with applicable policies and procedures, laws and regulations, and guidelines set by funding agencies. Coordinates, assigns, and delegates the activities and functions to the appropriate staff. Maintains verifiable records at an institution or facility that has a published records retention policy that is equal to or exceeds the retention required by federal, tribal, and/or state regulations. Maintains the confidentiality of any information received from any person or source about a patient, unless authorized in writing by the patient or required by law or court order. Complies with the applicable state, tribal, and federal regulations in regard to the security, safety and confidentiality of any record created, maintained, transferred or destroyed, whether the record is written, taped, computerized or stored in any other medium. Other duties may be assigned.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Directly supervises five (5) to twenty (20) employees in Health Services. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Qualifications:
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT Bachelor's degree from 4-year college or university in Records Management, Office Management or Business Administration; or six years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSFour (4) years full-time paid experience as a certified medical/clinical coder. No substitutions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Credential in medical coding from recognized nationally accrediting agency, i.e., American Health Information Management Association (CCS or CCS-P) or American Academy of Professional Coders (CPC).OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES Must be able to operate computers and other standard office machines.
